GMBB, KUALA LUMPUR, 28th June 2025: 34 Diploma in Illustration students from Malaysian Institute of Art hosted their final-year Illustration Diploma showcase, titled, "By Us For Real". By Us For Real, holds a significant underlying statement that represents the student's final year projects by the means of the concepts and processes. 

The concepts here share a similarity in theme, which is to promote appreciation towards the real-life experiences faced by the students, that are often under-appreciated by others. By Us For Real, aims to celebrate the connections, creativity and raw expression, in a world built on stories, memories and meaning.

Kicking off The Showcase With Dato' Wong Pui Lam,

Dato' Wong Pui Lam, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Malaysia Institute of Art, kicked off the event with a speech congratulating the students on reaching this life milestone. Dato Wong also gave fruitful advise to the students, which will greatly acclerate their careers, as they enter the workforce. 

Followed by a speech from,

Dean of Academic Studies cum Head of Illustration, Ms. Bibi Chew. 

Ms. Bibi Chew, congratulated her students on their hard work throughout this academic journey of theirs, and their effort and hard work organising this showcase, through full independence in getting collaboration from external sponsors and media partners. Additionally, Ms Bibi also wished a fruitful and smooth journey for her graduating students. 

Upon completion of the speeches, the event continued with award sessions for students, sponsors and partners. 


Putting Concept And Processes Into Reality

Next, there was a tour around all 34 of the students works. Each illustration and each item displayed in the 5th Floor of GMBB, KL, has a significant story behind it. Let's go through some of the works that's presented and displayed by the students throughout this showcase.

1) Loh Yi Heng - Datuk Gong

Yi Heng focuses on creating the illustration of a famous local folk deity in Malaysia, the Datuk Gong. Telling the backstory about how Datuk Gong was established.


2) Chong Rui Fang - Childhood Memories: Kedai Runcit In The Dream

Rui Fang was inspired to illustrate her memories as a child, heading to kedai runcit to purchase tin biscuits, candies and toys. A illustrated throwback to one's real childhood.


3) Guistine Chung Zi Heng - Haunted Chronicles

Guistine's Haunted Chronicles tells a horror story based on her high school days,her work incorporates anime concept artwork.


4) Sharon Koay Yenn Qi - Take The First Step And You'll Know

Sharon's artwork speaks to us about Malaysian culture. From our cuisines, all the way to our day-to-day slangs. 

That's all from the showcase for now, but there's still till 6th of July 2025 to view their work and join their activities at GMBB, KL. 

There are a total of 34 graduating students from the Diploma in Illustration course who are exhibiting their works in GMBB's 5th Floor. Their showcase will be held till this Sunday (6th July 2025), details are as follow:
