My core responsibilities included:

• Researching and curating the publication’s thematic content each month
• Coordinating communication with contributing writers / experts to develop the direction of articles
• Managing editorial schedules and deadlines. For context, Penang Monthly publishes 16-18 articles per month. Hence, I supervised 16+ projects simultaneously. Each writer-editor collaboration included the development of a skeletal draft (the potential story angles the writer can take), drafting interview questions, reaching out to prospective interviewees (this may number anywhere between 1-6 interviewees per article), interviewing and writing
• Substantive editing to ensure overall cohesion of structure, content and flow of the articles; and copyediting to align the articles with the publication’s house style and general tone
• Collaborating closely with the Creative Director to design the month’s publication, including brainstorming the layout / presentation of individual articles, cover designs, and selection and placement of images
• Post-manuscript formatting and proofreading for quality assurance before the publication goes to print
• Managing the publication’s social media accounts, crafting platform-specific copies alongside its monthly newsletter
